Have an Anger Problem!? by David Hertzler |
|
Well, maybe not. Anger can be hard to measure, especially if anger indicators from one culture are applied to another culture. Some of the best tests of anger are found in the Holy Bible, a book for all cultures. If you see any of these symptoms in your life, you have reasons to suspect an anger problem. 1 A mean, bad-tempered disposition (like Nabal, 1 Samuel 25:3). 2 Suicidal thoughts or wishes (like Jonah, Jonah 4:1-11) 3 A strong desire for revenge (like Esau, Genesis 27:41-45). 4 Frequent depression (like David, Psalm 69). 5 Uncontrollable lust or sexual misconduct (like Reuben, Genesis 29:31, 32, 35:22). 6 Frequent outbursts of rage or temper (like Saul, 1 Samuel 20:30-34). 7 Bitterness, an unforgiving spirit (like Ahithophel, 2 Samuel 16:15-17:23). 8 Contempt and put-downs (like Michal, 2 Samuel 6:16-23). 9 Religious zeal that wounds others through abuse or neglect (like the Pharisees, Mark 3:1-6). 10 Reluctance to get involved with the problems of those in your care (like Jacob, Genesis 34:1-7). 11 Intemperance, addictions or other harmful excesses (like Xerxes, Esther 1). 12 Continuous, unresolved family conflicts (like Rachel and Leah, Genesis 29:31-30:24). 13 Mistrust and deception (like Ananias and Sapphira, Acts 5:1-11). 14 Paranoia, the feeling that everybody is out to get me (like Herod, Matthew 2:1-18). 15 Abusing power, demanding unquestioning obedience (like Nebuchadnezzar, Daniel 3).
