CHILDREN OF CONFLICT A Family Bible Study by David Hertzler |
|
Jacob was a patriarch loved by God. God gave him a new name, Israel, "Prince of God." Yet Jacob's family life was a tangle of dysfunctional relationships and unruly children. Answer the following questions to get a picture of this amazing family. 1. What was the name of Jacob's first wife (Genesis 29:15-30)? How many children did she have (Genesis 29:31-35, 30:17-21)? 2. Examine the meanings of the names this wife gave her sons. What was she trying to get that Jacob was not giving her? 3. What was the name of Jacob's favourite wife (Genesis 29:30)? How many children did she have? (Genesis 30:22- 24, 35:16-19)? 4. Describe in your own words the relationship between these two wives (Genesis 30:1-21). 5. Describe the relationship between Jacob and Joseph, the son of his favourite wife? What did this favouritism do to relationships between Joseph and his half-brothers (Genesis 37:1-11)? 6. Describe the conduct of Jacob's children by his first wife. Reuben (Genesis 35:22) Simeon and Levi (Genesis 34:7-31) Judah (Genesis 38:1-30) Dinah (Genesis 34:1-5) 7. Write a statement summarizing the effect that Jacob's marriage relationships had on the discipline and conduct of his children. In spite of all this trouble, Jacob kept his family intact. They survived a famine and a move to a foreign country. Through faith in God's "Amazing Grace" he blessed all his sons before he died. Through faith he gave his new name Israel to his descendants and to the land they occupy today. |
