Maintaining Family Foundations
A Bible Study by David Hertzler

Foundations cannot be neglected once they are built. Like other parts of the house, they require maintenance. Underline the action words in these verses that tell some things we can do to keep our family foundations strong.

Spiritual Foundations

Remember...from where you have fallen; repent... (Revelation 2:5)

Draw near to God and He will draw near to you (James 4:7).

...singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God... (Ephesians 5:19–20).

...praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit... (Ephesians 6:18).

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins... (1 John 1:9).

Personal Foundations

Therefore, putting away lying, each one speak truth with his neighbor (Ephesians 4:25).

Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need (Ephesians 4:28).

And be kind to one another...forgiving one another (Ephesians 4:32).

Be angry, and do not sin (Ephesians 4:26).

Marital Foundations

...it is better to marry than to burn with passion (1 Corinthians 7:9)

...submitting to one another in the fear of God (Ephesians 5:21).

...husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies... (Ephesians 5:28).

...let the wife see that she respects her husband (Ephesians 5:33).

Parental Foundations

...fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord
(Ephesians 6:4).

...admonish the young women to...love their children, to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good...(Titus 2:4–5).

He must manage his own family well and see that his
children obey him with proper respect
(1 Timothy 3:4 NIV).

You shall teach them (God’s words) to your children...
(Deuteronomy 11:19).
