Knees and Other Nurturing Touch
A Bible Study by David Hertzler

When the Bible speaks of tender, loving contact between parents and children, it often mentions knees. Why are a parent’s knees so comforting to a child?

Genesis 48:10–12. When Israel kissed and embraced his grandsons, where did he hold them (see verse 12)?

Genesis 50:22–23. Where were Joseph’s grandchildren placed? This not only helped them bond with their grandfather. It also was a sign that they belonged to him.

2 Kings 4:20. When her son was not feeling well, how did his mother comfort him?

Job 3:12. When a new baby was born, there were _________________ to receive and hold him.

Isaiah 66:12–13. A mother comforts her child by dandling (playing with) him on her _________________.

The knees are part of what we call the “lap” today. Think of ways that you can make your lap more inviting to your child. Include:

·Comforting

·Protecting

·Playing or pleasuring

·Bonding or belonging

Also, don’t forget the power of knees bent in prayer for your child.

What other parts of the body can a parent use to nurture a child? See if you can find them in these scripture verses.

·Isaiah 49:22

·Mark 10:16

·Ruth 4:16

·Genesis 31:28
