Some people claim that alcohol in moderation can actually be healthy. This claim may be uncharitable to people whose racial characteristics make their bodies more vulnerable even to small amounts of alcohol. In any culture or gene pool, alcohol has ways of pushing people to excess. Consider what wise men of old said about drinking.

1. Proverbs 20:1. “You have been drinking too much when you think people are laughing with you.”

Not only does drinking lead to senseless laughter. What else does it lead to?

2. Proverbs 23:29-30. Name six consequences often found among people who drink too much.

3. Proverbs 23:31-32. Wine is attractive, pleasant and often socially acceptable. But it is dangerous! To what does this scripture compare the danger of wine?

4. Proverbs 23:33. Name some strange things that you have seen people do or heard people say under the influence of alcohol.

5. Proverbs 23:34-35. How does this word picture show the addictive power of alcohol?

6. Proverbs 31:4-7. If you want to rise above poverty and lead your family or community to wholeness, should you be drinking at all? What “bitterness of heart” do people drink to hide? Can you think of better ways to deal with the disappointment and pain of life?

7. Isaiah 5:11-12. These people were becoming slaves to alcohol because they had stopped thinking about _______________________________________.
