God Provides a Wife for Arthur |
|
They called Rebekah and asked her, “Will you go with this man?” “I will go,” she said. So they sent their sister Rebekah on her way...Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah, and he married Rebekah. So she became his wife, and he loved her (Genesis 24:58, 59, 67). This biblical account is re-enacted in the following true contemporary story of Arthur and his bride... “I really want to get married, but I don’t know who would marry someone as old as I am,” Arthur said to his friend Tom. Arthur was pleasant and quiet. But he was already in his late thirties. He felt that he was too old for anyone to be interested in marrying him. Tom said, “If God wants you to get married, then He will direct you to the right woman.” He encouraged Arthur to pray about finding a wife and assured him that he would pray for him too. Arthur and Tom prayed about the matter for more than a year. A number of times Arthur told Tom how lonely he was. He wanted someone of his very own to love, someone who would love him in return. One day Tom told Arthur of a single Christian lady living some distance away. Her name was Marie, and she was also in her late thirties. Arthur seemed interested. Tom suggested that Arthur ask his parents to write to Marie’s family. Arthur’s parents wrote and soon received a favorable answer. After Arthur and Marie had written to each other several times, Arthur phoned Marie and made arrangements to visit her. Arthur was excited. At the same time he felt some fear, because he understood the importance of the visit. But Arthur and Marie liked each other from the start, and Marie’s parents showed a deep respect for Arthur. Arthur shared with his own parents how he felt about Marie, and they prayed together. They decided that Arthur and Marie should be married, and the date for the wedding was set. Everyone in Marie’s small community was invited to the wedding and feast. Arthur’s family and Marie’s friends from other communities also came to the wedding. They gathered to hear Arthur and Marie promise in the presence of their families, friends, the minister and God to be faithful to each other. It was a joyful time for all. Following the ceremony, everyone joined in a big feast of traditional foods brought by the friends and relatives. After the feast, Arthur and Marie went together to live in a small house which had been made ready for them. That was more than twenty-five years ago. Today Arthur and Marie have a young adult son and still live happily together. |
