It's Marriage, Not Mating
A Bible Study by David Hertzler

Canada geese are drawn together by instinct and mate for life. Their union provides companionship and teamwork and gives them children. Marriage, as God planned it, is a higher order of relationship than mating. Fill in the blanks below.

1. Genesis 2:18. The Lord God said, “It is not good for man to be ________________________.”

This word means “separate,” “apart,” “like a chief of a city.” To correct this situation, God said, “I will make a ________________________ for him.” This helper would “draw him out,” encouraging him to share his soul with another human.

Unmarried people can also “help” each other through friendships to avoid “alone-ness.”

2. Acts 18:26. When Priscilla and Aquila (a married couple) heard him (an evangelist), they invited him into their home and ________________________

________________________________________________.

A married couple can make a effective team for doing God’s work. Marriage also gives a visible picture of the relationship between Christ and the people of God (see Ephesians 5:31-32).

3. 1 Corinthians 7:2. Since there is so much ________________________, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband.

God knows how strong human sex drives are, because he created them. Marriage is God’s plan for satisfying sexual desires in a life-giving way.

4. Malachi 2:15. Has not the Lord made them one? In flesh and spirit they are his. And why one? Because he was seeking __________________________.

Children whose parents are not married often have more difficulty living the way God wants them to live. Some governments are aware of this connection. As part of welfare reform, the U.S. government has proposed to increase spending on programs promoting healthy marriages.

5. Genesis 2:23-24. “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh. She shall be called _______________, for she was taken out of man.” For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his ____________.

Both men and women feel incomplete without the other. Marriage restores part of what was “taken out” in the creation of woman.
