Sonnet for a Two-Year-Old: for H.K.
by Melody Lewis

Hello there, little one with sunlit hair,
What’s new for you today? What fresh word sings
upon your unaccustomed tongue? What brings
delight to your admiring eyes? What rare
and lovely treasure keeps you still aware
of wondrous magic hid in homely things--
balloon or ball, a leaf, some cloth that clings,
a wooden spoon, deep carvings on my chair?

Too soon the years will pass, the world grow tame.
Like us, will you then seek this pristine joy
in frantic entertainments? Will you claim
life barren? May some child with simple toy
restore to you these first delights, repay
the joy your homespun toys bring us today.
