Your Authority as a Parent
A Bible Study by David Hertzler

Do you have any idea what your authority as a parent looks like to your spouse and children?

Use the exercise below to make a picture of the authority you exercise over others. First, read the Bible verses. Notice that authority is called “power,” “right” or “freedom” in some verses. Next, score each item on a scale of 1-10, with 10 as “Most” and 1 as “Least.” Then select from each group one or two items on which you scored highest. Put them together into a another group called “A Picture of My Parental Authority.”

1: The source of your authority

Where does your authority (power) come from? To whom do you look for this authority?

_____God (Matthew 9:8, John 19:11)

_____A higher human authority (Acts 9:14, 26:10)

_____Satan (Luke 4:6, Ephesians 2:2)

_____Acting as your own authority (1 Timothy 2:12)

2: The subject(s) of your authority

Over what or whom are you actually able to exercise authority (power)?

_____Over other people (Luke 7:8, 1 Timothy 3:4)

_____Over nature and natural objects (Luke 10:19, Romans 9:21)

_____Over your possessions (Acts 5:4)

_____Over spirits or spiritual forces (Luke 9:1)

_____Over your own spirit (Proverbs 16:22)

3: The use(s) of your authority

How do you use your authority?

_____To teach (Matthew 7:29, Acts 1:8-9)

_____To heal (Matthew 10:1, 8)

_____To rule or control (Romans 13:1, 1 Timothy 3:4)

_____To please yourself (1 Corinthians 9:12)

_____To hurt or abuse (1 Corinthians 8:9-13)

4: The results of using your authority

What effect does your use of authority have on others?

____Mostly constructive (2 Corinthians 10:8, 13:10)

_____Mostly destructive (Acts 26:10)

_____Ineffective and weak (1 Samuel 2:22-25)

_____Godly and effective (Genesis 18:17-19)
