Depression: When Should Parents Seek Help
by David Hertzler

If one or more of these signs of depression persist, parents should seek help.

  1. Frequent sadness, tearfulness, crying. A preference for black clothes, or poetry and music with themes of death or destruction.
  2. Hopelessness, shown by pessimism and neglect of personal appearance or hygiene.
  3. Social isolation, difficulty with relationships, dropping out of clubs, sports or other activities they once enjoyed.
  4. Persistent boredom or low energy, cutting classes, a drop in grade averages, poor concentration.
  5. Low self esteem and guilt, increased sensitivity to rejection or failure, increased irritability, anger or hostility.
  6. Frequent complaints of physical illnesses, especially headaches and stomach-aches.
  7. A major change in eating or sleeping patterns: all-night television watching, loss of appetite.
  8. Running away from home, or talking about it.
  9. Self-destructive behaviour; thinking or talking of suicide.
