An Unbroken Will
A Bible Study by David Hertzler

1 Kings 1-2 tells the sad story of Adonijah, a young prince with a weak spirit and a strong will. After reading these chapters and the references in the story below, complete the story by filling in the blanks.

When Adonijah’s father King David got old, Adonijah showed his strong will by saying, “I _________ be king.” His father had never disciplined his son’s will by asking, “Why __________________________________?”

Adonijah was not the oldest son in his family. What happened to his older brothers Amnon and Absalom, who would have been in line for the crown? See 2 Samuel 13:28-29 and 18:12-14. ____________________

Adonijah got the support of two other strong-willed leaders. One of these was ______________, general of the army (I Chronicles 18:15). He was one of three brothers about whom King David once said, “These sons of Zeruiah are too __________ for me” (2 Samuel 3:39). The other leader was _________________ the priest. He was the descendant of another priest named _____________, who had refused to discipline his sons (1Samuel 3:11-14).

Adonijah held a public sacrifice and celebration. He invited all his brothers except _____________. King David had promised this brother’s mother _________________ that her son would be the next king. When David heard of Adonijah’s uprising, he confirmed this promise to his son Solomon. Then he called in _________________ the priest and had Solomon proclaimed king.

When Adonijah heard of this, he dismissed his guests and fled to the holy place. Someone told Solomon, “Adonijah is _____________ of you. He wants you to swear that you will not ________________.” The new king promised to spare Adonijah if he showed himself to be ____________________________.

However, after King David died, Adonijah went to Solomon’s mother and asked for __________________, the girl who had nursed David in his old age. Solomon said, “He might as well be asking for the ____________.” He gave Benaiah, the leader of his army, orders to ______________ Adonijah. He also punished the other men who had joined Adonijah in the uprising.
