Profile of a Gang
Member A Bible Study by David Hertzler |
|
Jephthah, a man who was commended for his faith (Hebrews 11:32, 39), was a gang member for a time. His story in Judges 11:1-12:7 shows some of the traits still found among gang members today. Write down the reference for the verse(s) where you find these traits. Jephthah. . . 1. Was the result of marital unfaithfulness by his parents. 2. Was rejected by his brothers, not protected by his father. 3. Was disinherited by his family. 4. Was a savvy fighter. 5. Was accepted and followed by other youths. 6. Was indignant at injustice. 7. Bargained to give armed protection in exchange for recognition and power. 8. Had a tendency to make rash vows. However, Jephthah showed other qualities that turned him from a gang leader into a mature leader of his people. Write the reference of the verse(s) where these are found. 1. He knew the history of his people. 2. He believed in the sovereignty of his peoples God. 3. He was willing to negotiate rather than fight. 4. He was committed to fulfilling his promises and vows. |
