Why Do Women Have Abortions?
A Bible Study by David Hertzler

There is usually a compelling reason why a woman chooses to have an abortion. These reasons call for compassion, not condemnation, from those who oppose abortion. Reflect on these biblical responses to reasons often given for choosing abortion.

I didn’t realize it was a baby. I thought it was just a blob of tissue.
Psalm 139:13-16, Job 10:8-9, Psalm 119:73. Does God know what is being formed inside of you? What does He say about his plans for this living being?

I was ashamed of what people would say about my single pregnancy.” Genesis 16:1-16. Hagar also had a crisis pregnancy. God revealed Himself to her as “The God who sees.” Observe His compassion for her. If the God who sees you could have this much care and compassion for you, why does it matter what people say?

I was pressured by my parents (boyfriend, husband).
Galatians 1:10. How would you answer the question in this verse?

Exodus 1:15-2:10. How did these Hebrew women respond to pressure to kill their babies?

My doctor said the baby was deformed. He made abortion sound so easy. He didn’t tell me about the physical, emotional and spiritual damage it would do to ME!
Ephesians 4:17-18. Why might a kind and compassionate doctor still give unwise counsel?

Matthew 18:25-35. What basis do you have for forgiving a person who does you wrong?

It wasn’t a good time for a baby.
Genesis 22:1-14. God asked Abraham to do something that felt “wrong.” When Abraham obeyed, God revealed Himself as “The God Who Provides.” What would it take for you to believe that God could provide for you in an inconvenient pregnancy?

My pastor and counsellor said it was up to me, a personal decision.
Proverbs 14:12. Who do you turn to when the people who should be able to explain the ways of life and death can’t, or don’t?
