Songs for Fathers A Bible Study by David Hertzler |
|
Psalms 127 and 128 are two of the most beautiful songs ever written about the joys of fathering. They compare fathers to several kinds of workers that were well-known to the culture that produced these songs. As you think about each worker, write a short paragraph describing how you do the same kind of work in your family as a father. The Builder: follows a set of plans, buys supplies and works carefully, taking pride in his work. The builder-father _______________________________________ The Watchman (Security Guard): stays alert for hidden dangers. He gets special training and equipment to protect those for whom he is given responsibility. The watchman-father _______________________________________ The Soldier: knows that his success depends upon being able to shoot further and straighter than the enemy. He puts time and care into preparing and maintaining his weapons (arrows). The soldier-father ___________________________________________ The Gardener: cultivates, prunes and fertilizes the mature plants so that they bear fruit. He also protects, weeds and waters the young shoots so that they grow well. The gardener-father _________________________________________ All these workers: trust God for their success. They know that becoming workaholic wont make them successful. They work reasonable hours and sleep peacefully at night, knowing that God is working for them.
