Diploma in Biblical Counselling

The Diploma in Biblical Counselling is a Continuing Education Unit program designed to do Level One counselling. This program gives the theoretical foundation and the basic skills to promote Christian growth through biblical counselling. Courses are held at Rankin Inlet, NU, Canada, Fort Smith, NT, Canada, and Inuvik, NU, Canada.

The Diploma in Biblical Counselling program has the following curriculum objectives:

  1. To teach a comprehensive knowledge of the theory and methodology of biblical counselling;
  2. To develop a well-based sense of understanding of people from a biblical perspective for a ministry of counselling.

The program is open to any full-time church worker or para-church worker, as well as to lay persons in the counselling field who wish to involve themselves in touching people's lives more deeply when and where they hurt.

Requirements

  1. Completion of ten (10) Continuing Education Units, as mentioned below.
  2. Satisfactory indication that the counselling theory has been adequately understood and applied in a personal manner.

5601 Counselling 1: Theory ...............................Inuvik, January 5-22, 2004
A comprehensive study of biblical counselling theory covering the psychological nature of humankind, how problems develop, and appropriate counselling strategies for the biblical counsellor. 1 CEU.

5611 Counselling Practicum 1 ............................ Inuvik, January 5-22, 2004. Supervised experience in group discussion and issues relative to the model taught in Counseling 1: Theory. The student will be helped to observe group dynamics and individual functioning within the group setting. Pre-requisite: 5601. 1 CEU

5602 Counselling 2: Procedures and Process .................. Dryden, September 2-19, 2003, Inuvik, February 5-20, 2004, Ft . Smith, February 24-March12, 2004. Counselling techniques and strategies dealing with the process of change based on diagnosis and treatment. Pre-requisite: 5601. 1 CEU

5612 Counselling Practicum 2 ............................... Dryden, September 2-19, 2003, Inuvik, February 5-20, 2004, Ft. Smith, February 24-March12, 2004. Primary emphasis will be given to skill teaching. There will be an introduction to supervised counselling with emphasis on conceptualizing problems according to the model taught in Counselling 1: Theory and Counselling 2: Procedures and Process. Individual counselling and critiquing of taped sessions will also be a part of the course. Pre-requisites: 5601, 5602, 5611. 1 CEU.

5202 Psychopathology 1 ......................... Dryden, November 17-28, 2003, Inuvik, May 10-21, 2004, Iqaluit, Sept 21-October 8, 2003. A specific study of some of the more common psychological problems faced by people. The causal background, dynamics, and process of treatment will be the main emphases of the course. Focus will be on eating disorders and sexual disorders. Pre-requisite: 5601. 1 CEU

5203 Psychopathology 2 ........................... Iqaluit, September 22-October 8, 2003, Dryden, November 17-28, 2003, Inuvik, May 2-21, 2004
A continued study of some of the more common psychological problems faced by people. The causal background, dynamics, and process of treatment will be the main emphases of the course. Focus will be on depression and anxiety. Pre-requisite: 5601. 1 CEU

5109 Counselling and Abuse .......................... January 20-22, 2003 (Inuvik)
This course is designed to study the various types of abuse, including sexual, physical, verbal, and emotional abuse. Special emphasis will be given to the counselling issues relevant to adults who were abused as children. Biblical counsellors should be able to identify significant abuse indicators, understand the dynamics of abuse, and understand how to provide a caring and healing ministry. Pre-requisite: 5601. 1 CEU

5103 Marriage and Family (Video) ................................. 1 CEU As arranged by student.
A study of the family: its proper functioning according to the Scripture, the major causes and patterns of family breakdown for more effective counselling strategies to restore harmony. Marriage and parent-child relationships will be examined. Pre-requisite: 5601.

5301 Biblical Interpretation (Video) ................................ 1 CEU As arranged by student.
A study of methods of biblical interpretation. A careful investigation of how one approaches understanding and interpretation of the Holy Scriptures. This course is designed to assist the student in understanding a more systematic, personalized method of studying, interpreting and applying the Holy Scriptures in a ministry oriented setting.

Elective Counselling: Counselling by Encouragement (Video)....1 CEU As arranged by student.
This course will study the ways and methods to help develop relationships between the counsellor and the counsellee. Encouragement and relationships are important in the counselling process. Additionally, learning the proper use of encouragement will improve all interpersonal relationships in the family, church and community.
