Scripture Commentary

What is a man of God? A man of God is confident, determined and obedient to God. In
I Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9, Paul gives a list of things that should be true of a leader of God's people. These same things should be true of every father.
Here are the things that a man of God should be developing in his life.

I Timothy 3:2 A good reputation
Only one wife, sexually pure
Sober, sound in mind and judgment
Opens his home to others
Respected for his good living
Able to teach others
I Timothy 3:3 Not controlled by drink
Doesn't fight or quarrel with others
Gentle and peaceful
Not greedy for money
I Timothy 3:4 Manages his family well, so that his children obey and respect him
I Timothy 3:6 Spiritual growth takes time
I Timothy 3:7 Respected by non-Christians
Titus 1:7 Doesn't try to please himself
Doesn't get angry quickly
Controls his actions
Titus 1:8 Loves what is good
Does things in the right way
Controls his desires
Stays free from sin.

There is no shortcut to becoming a man of God. It takes time and effort. It is a day by day growing process. As a man becomes more godly, he can see this growth in his life. Others can see it too, because he is becoming more and more like Jesus.

"So be strong. Show yourself to be a man. Do what the Lord your God tells you" (I Kings 2:2, 3).

Window to Life
One afternoon Pastor Brown went to visit a new family in the village. The mother and children were home, but the father was gone. The pastor said he would visit later, but the children said, "Just wait a few minutes. Daddy will soon be home." Then the children talked excitedly about their father and the things he did. Soon the father came in. The pastor was surprised. From the children's talk he had expected to meet a big, handsome man. Instead, he saw an average, ordinary-looking man, a person you wouldn't look at twice if you met him as a stranger. Yet he had the respect of his family and of other people He was a "man of God" in the eyes of his family.

To Do...

By yourself
Give yourself a score of 1 to 5 for each of the things in the list under "Commentary." 5 is the best, 1 is the worst. Find your total score.

With Your Wife
Ask your wife to give you a score on the same list. Talk about the results. What weak areas are you willing to work on?

With Your Children
Read them the story of Stephen's death in Acts 7. Explain how he was a man of God even though he was killed.
